The importance of breast imaging

When it comes to beating breast cancer, early detection is vital. Once you turn 40, it's important to start getting yearly mammograms and clinical breast exams. When breast cancer is caught early, there are usually more treatment options.

The recommendation is that women between 20 and 40 years old should have a clinical breast exam every three years. Women in their 20s should conduct monthly breast exams.

Breast cancer screening

Our Trident Health system facilities all offer 3D mammograms, which combine multiple breast X-rays to create a three-dimensional picture of the breast. This type of mammography can reduce the need for additional imaging services and can find tumors that regular mammograms cannot.

This year, more than 30,000 women will choose to have their mammogram at a Trident Health facility. To serve women throughout the Greater Charleston are, mammograms are available at the following locations:

Genetic testing for cancer risk

Individuals who carry mutations in certain genes are at a higher risk of developing cancer. But cancer doesn't have to be inevitable. Our breast health centers offer cancer risk assessment and genetic testing, which can detect mutations early and help you calculate your risk of developing cancer. Genetic tests help those with a strong family history of cancer determine whether their risk is high enough to consider additional interventions.

If you have any of the following risk factors, you should consider genetic risk assessment and testing for the cancer genes:

  • You or a close family member were diagnosed with ovarian cancer, male breast cancer or pancreatic cancer
  • You are of Ashkenazi Jewish descent
  • Multiple family members have been diagnosed with cancer
  • You were diagnosed with cancer at a young age

If you're considering genetic testing, you should discuss the process with your care team. Genetic testing raises several questions that need to be addressed individually, such as:

  • Do I want to know if I am at a higher risk for developing cancer?
  • How will the test results impact me emotionally?
  • How will genetic testing help my blood relatives?
