Understanding bariatric surgery
Bariatric surgery alters the digestive process by reducing the amount of food the stomach can hold.
As a result, patients experience decreased appetite, increased feelings of fullness, increased metabolism and generally choose healthier food preferences. These positive changes allow the body to lose weight without the internal fight to return to the higher set point.
Types of bariatric surgery
There are a variety of bariatric options available, including:
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery — This operation creates a direct connection from the stomach to the lower segment of the small intestine, skipping the parts of the digestive tract that absorb calories and nutrients.
- Gastric sleeve — Also known as sleeve gastrectomy, gastric sleeve surgery is another type of restrictive procedure that reduces the stomach's size. No medical device is implanted.
- Gastric band surgery — During this procedure, your surgical team places an adjustable balloon around the top of the stomach to essentially function as an hourglass, providing a feeling of satisfaction after a small meal and affecting hunger regulation hormones.
Whenever possible, our bariatric surgeons use minimally invasive robotic surgery to perform weight-loss procedures. This advanced technology is done through smaller incisions than traditional surgery, potentially leading to less pain, reduced scarring and a quicker recovery.
